2 Year Ceiling announced on Canada Student Visas

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has recently announced a 2-year ceiling for student visas. This new measure is intended to reduce student intake by 35% with the ceiling being set at around 364,000 permits being issued in 2024. Marc Miller, the Immigration Minister of Canada has stated that the reasons for this measure are to prevent further growth in the amount of international students to keep a sustainable level of temporary residence in Canada.

Provinces and Territories

Each province and territory will have authority over the permits being issued by the colleges and universities in their area. This means provinces and territories that have reached unsustainable levels of student intake will now be able to adjust the amount of intake accordingly.

Post-Graduation Work Permit Program

IRCC has also made changes to the Post-Graduation Work Permit Program, a program that allows international student visas permission to work in Canada after the completion of their degrees. Immigration Minister Marc Miller has said that these permits will no longer be issued for institutions following the public-private model. He has also spoken briefly about open work permits being restricted to only spouses of international students registered in masters, doctoral, or professional programs. This means spouses of international students in studies of lower levels such as undergraduate and college programs will no longer receive open work permits.
