Easier Immigration for Overseas Nurses & Midwives in Australia

Simpler Immigration Channels for Overseas Nurses and Midwives: Australia

Good news for midwives and nurses wishing to practice in Australia! From April 2025, the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Board (NMBA) will introduce two simplified pathways to make immigration more straightforward and efficient for overseas health practitioners.

These new paths are for registered nurses and midwives from approved countries such as the UK, US, Ireland, Singapore, and Spain, and provinces in Canada like British Columbia and Ontario pending jurisdiction approval.

Who Can Apply?

Australia is facilitating the quick entry of approved experienced registered nurses and midwives. There are two paths open, depending on the country or jurisdiction where you acquired your nursing qualification.

Pathway 1: Fast-Track for Nurses from Approved Countries

If you have finished your nursing studies in a country that has been endorsed by NMBA, you can qualify under Pathway 1. To apply, you must meet these requirements:

Nursing education completed in an NMBA-approved country
✔ At least 1 year of work experience (1,800 hours) as a registered nurse since January 1, 2017
Current or previous nursing registration
Certificate of Good Standing from relevant authorities
No criminal record
Professional indemnity insurance
Recent work experience that proves your ongoing professional development
English language proficiency

Pathway 2: For Nurses from Other Countries

If your nursing education was not from an NMBA-approved country, you can still apply under Pathway 2. Here’s what you need:

✔ Completion of regulatory nursing exams as per NMBA requirements
✔ At least 1 year of work experience (1,800 hours) as a registered nurse since January 1, 2017
Current or previous nursing registration
No criminal record
Professional indemnity insurance
Recent work experience showcasing ongoing professional development
English language proficiency

What If You Don’t Qualify for These Pathways?

If you don’t meet the requirements for these new pathways, don’t worry! Australia still offers other immigration options based on outcome-based assessments. These might take longer, but they still provide a way for qualified nurses to migrate.

Why This Matters?

Australia is facing a shortage of nurses and midwives, and these changes will help bring in skilled professionals more efficiently. If you’ve been thinking about moving to Australia to advance your healthcare career, this is the perfect opportunity!
