Europe Rolls Out Digital Entry/Exit System (EES)
Europe has officially announced a major transformation in its border control system with the launch of the Entry/Exit System (EES), effective April 10, 2026. This initiative aims to modernise border management, improve security, and streamline entry procedures for international travellers.
Under the new system, traditional passport stamping will be replaced by a fully digital biometric registration process for non-EU and non-Schengen visitors.
What Changes for Travellers?
The new Europe Travel Rules apply to all short-term visitors, including tourists and business travellers. Upon arrival, travellers will be required to:
- Provide fingerprints and facial image data
- Present passport details for digital verification
- Complete biometric checks at self-service kiosks or staffed counters
Children under 12 years will not need to provide fingerprints, but will still undergo facial image capture.
“Travel to Europe” App Introduced
To enhance convenience, authorities have launched the “Travel to Europe” mobile app, allowing travellers to:
- Upload passport details and facial images
- Complete part of the verification process up to 72 hours before departure
However, final biometric verification will still occur at the point of entry.
Who Must Comply?
The EES applies to:
- Non-EU and non-Schengen nationals
- Short-term visa holders (tourism/business up to 90 days)
Who is Exempt?
The following categories are exempt from biometric verification:
- EU and Schengen citizens
- Long-term visa and residence permit holders
- Transport crew members
- Armed forces personnel
- Cross-border residents
Note: Ireland and Cyprus will continue manual border checks and are not part of the EES rollout.
What Happens if You Refuse?
Travellers who refuse to provide biometric data will be denied entry into participating European countries.
Benefits of the New System
The digital EES is designed to deliver:
- Faster border processing
- Enhanced security and fraud detection
- Accurate tracking of traveler movements
- Streamlined and paperless procedures
- Improved safety across European borders
