Australia Announces 2025–26 Migration Program with 185,000 Places
The Australian Government has confirmed that the permanent Australia Migration Program 2025–26 will remain at 185,000 places, maintaining the same levels as the previous year.
The program continues to prioritise skilled migration, with 132,200 places (71%) allocated to the Skill stream. This stream aims to boost Australia’s workforce, fill skill shortages—especially in regional areas—and support long-term economic growth.
The Family stream remains steady at 52,500 places (28%), primarily through Partner visas, helping Australians reunite with loved ones. The Special Eligibility stream accounts for 300 places for individuals in unique circumstances, such as returning residents.
Key allocations within the Skill stream include:
- Employer Sponsored: 44,000 places
- Skilled Independent: 16,900 places
- Regional visas: 33,000 places
- State/Territory Nominated: 33,000 places
- New Talent & Innovation visa: 4,300 places (transitioning from the former Global Talent and Distinguished Talent visas)
Regional and state/territory nominated categories together make up 36% of the overall program and are designed to meet local workforce needs.
The Family stream continues to be demand-driven, with Partner and Child visa planning levels set for guidance only.
The government also clarified that the permanent Migration Program 2025–26 is separate from Net Overseas Migration (NOM), which also includes temporary visa holders such as students and working holidaymakers. For further information, contact Asif Consulting.
