Australian government extends Post-study work rights for international students to handle labor shortage.
The Australian Government has made public its intentions to increase the duration of post-study work rights for international students who satisfy the requirements for a Temporary Graduate Work visa (subclass 485), in select fields of study.
Also, only students graduating with higher education degrees in fields that Australia is lacking workforce in will be eligible to apply for these extended “Stay and Work” periods.
The Students studying in select degrees will have their Temporary Graduate Work visa (subclass 485) work rights extended by:
Four years from the original two for Bachelor’s degree graduates.
Five years from the original three for Master’s degree graduates.
Six years from the original four for Ph.D. graduates.
More information regarding which degrees will be selected for work-rights extensions will be published sometime in late October 2022.
This new development that Australia is aiming to implement will make its post-study work rights the most generous compared to any other country and will attract even more students to Australia.
This will also provide international students an incentive to complete higher degrees in work areas of Australia with skilled labor shortages which will allow them to stay back after graduation and be presented with a greater number of opportunities to become part of Australia’s future skilled workforce.
