Child Sponsorship

Canada is now offering dependent children, who are living abroad, the chance to be sponsored by their parents if they are Canadian citizens or permanent residents with the aid of family class sponsorship. This sponsorship is provided to allow children to come to Canada and attain permanent residency there so that their families can be reunited.

Requirements of children for gaining Sponsorship

For a child to be eligible for this sponsorship program, there are certain requirements a child must have which include the child must be dependent, as in He or She must be under the age of 22 years, have parents who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents and the child must not be married or be in any legal relationship.

However, if the child has any physical or mental problems that make him/her incapable of supporting themselves and they have relied on their parent’s support before reaching the age of 22 they can still be considered eligible after becoming 22 years old.

Requirements to provide Sponsorship

The conditions for parents to provide Sponsorship for their child are as follows;

  1. Above 18 years of age.

  2. The capability to provide for the basic-need of yourself and your dependent child.

  3. Have Canadian citizenship or permanent resident in Canada, or a person registered under the Indian Act of Canada.

  4. Proof of relations with the child.

  5. You must not have any criminal records, charges of a serious offense, or be bankrupt.

  6. Not be under any investigation regarding your immigration.

  7. You must be capable of earning income for yourself and not have to rely on others unless due to the reason being disability.

Moreover dependent children under the age of 22 can only be given undertaking for up to 10 years or until they reach the age of 25 whichever comes first and if the age of the dependent child is over 22 years then he/she can only receive undertaking for 3 years.

Sponsorship Requirements for a child in Quebec

The requirements of providing a dependent child in Quebec with sponsorship are different compared to other areas in Canada since the province has its immigration policies.

To start you will have to provide the normal application at the federal level with IRCC Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada, and with it, you will also have to provide an application at the provincial level with the Ministère de l’Immigration, de la Francisation and de l’Intégration (MIFI).

Furthermore, an application for the (QSC) Quebec Selection Certificate needs to be submitted and an undertaking with the province needs to be signed by the candidates who applied for the sponsorship of the dependent child. The undertaking requires you to compensate the government for the aid they have provided in supporting the dependent child in your care during the Sponsorship.

Finally, the duration of the undertaking also varies in Quebec. Those dependant children under the age of 16 are given 10 years of sponsorship or until they turn 18 whichever comes first and those who are 16 or above are given an undertaking of 3 years or until they turn 25 years of age, whichever comes first.
