Removing traveler’s need for proof of vaccination and usage of Arrive Can app to enter Canada

Restrictions, It has been announced by the Government of Canada that starting October 1, 2022, the need for travelers to be vaccinated will be removed along with the ArriveCan app requirement becoming optional.

The (PHAC) Public Health Agency of Canada has stated that from October 1, 2022, all travelers, regardless of citizenship, will be exempted from the following restrictions:

  • submit public health information through the ArriveCAN app or website;

  • provide proof of vaccination;

  • undergo pre- or on-arrival testing;

  • carry out COVID-19-related quarantine or isolation;

  • monitor and report if they develop signs or symptoms of COVID-19 upon arriving in Canada.

There will also no longer be a need to wear masks on flights or trains within Canada. The PHAC has pointed out that the reason for the removal of these travel restrictions is because of Canada’s high vaccination rates, lower hospitalization and death rates, and the availability and use of vaccine boosters. However the government still strongly emphasizes that travelers take precautions and look after their health.

Health Minister Jean-Yves Duclos has stated that it is thanks to the Canadians who have taken the initiative to get vaccinated that Canada has reached the point where it can safely remove the sanitary restrictions at the border. However, he also stated that there is a possibility that COVID-19 and other respiratory viruses will continue to circulate over the cold months and thus he requested people continue with their Covid-19 vaccination, including booster doses, and exercise individual public health measures.

Arrive app becoming optional

The ArriveCan app which was originally needed by travelers to upload their travel plans and provide proof of vaccination to show CBSA agents before they were allowed to travel to Canada will become an optional choice for all abroad travelers.

No restrictions on domestic travel

This announcement was well within expectations as the number of COVID-19 cases has been on the decline since more people got vaccinated and the virus has moved towards becoming an endemic instead of a pandemic similar to a common cold.

Since last June Canada had already suspended the vaccination requirements for domestic and outbound travel. The government officials said that those vaccine mandates were removed due to the improvement in the public health situation as 90% of Canadians had been vaccinated against COVID-19.

Starting October 1 Canada will be removing all travel restrictions placed during the Covid-19 pandemic
