152,000 reported job vacancies in healthcare and social assistance sectors in Canada by Statistics Canada

Recently Statistics Canada released its latest report on payroll employment, earnings and hours, and job vacancies for August 2022.

In this report it is mentioned how many employees within Canada’s workforce are currently receiving wages, the amount they all receive, and their work hours. Aside from this the report also monitors the number of vacant jobs that are still available or job positions that were previously filled but are now available for some reason.

In accordance with the report, Canada had around 958,500 job vacancies in August which although a big change compared to the 919,200 job vacancies last August in 2021 but is still small when compared to the data released in July.

Healthcare reaches record high job vacancies

The Health care sector in particular is mentioned in the report to have a record new high number of job vacancies. There were about 152,000 job vacancies present within the healthcare and social assistance sector during August 2021 which was a rise of 0.4% since the data from June and July, making the total job vacancy percentage rise up to 6.4%.

Due to this large amount of Job vacancies, the Healthcare sector in Canada is currently experiencing there is a severe staff shortage which has led to hospitals temporarily closing their emergency rooms or reducing other services. For this reason, Canada currently has a strong climate for immigration as it is heavily reliant on immigrants to make up the labor demand. Currently out of the total staff in the Healthcare sector, a quarter of the nurses and 36% of the physicians are made up of immigrants. Moreover, as it can be difficult for foreign medical professionals to gain proper licensing from Canadian authorities making it difficult if not impossible for them to reduce the burden in the healthcare sector, the IRCC Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada has decided to take appropriate measures to make it easier for foreign-trained medical professionals to immigrate to Canada, an example of this is the removal of some barriers for physicians that are currently residing in Canada under temporary residency visa.

Professional, scientific, and technical services increase payroll employment

Aside from the Healthcare and Social assistance sector, there were also changes experienced by other sectors such as a slight increase in payroll employment in the professional scientific and technical services sector. The sector’s total payroll employment had increased by 0.4% in August, which was an increase of 5,200. Through this method Alberta and Quebec each were able to fill over 500 job vacancies while British Columbia and Ontario were reported to have even more significant gains.

The number of job vacancies in the sector is reported to have been reduced to 59,600 which is consistent with the data taken last year during the same period.
