2024-2025 Migration Program

The government has set 185,000 places for the permanent Migration Program for the year 2024-25. Skill stream encompasses 132,200 places, out of these, which is about 70%.

Future Planning

From 2025-26, the government will plan to start the permanent Migration Program for four years at a time instead of just one year. To better manage the migration system, this change is part of the new Migration Strategy.

Reducing Net Overseas Migration

We can anticipate from Government actions that there would be reduced net overseas migration by 110,000 people from 1 July 2024. Net overseas migration will be dropped from 528,000 in 2022-23 to 260,000 in 2024-25.

New Migration Strategy

The new Migration Strategy was released on 11 December 2023. This strategy focuses on:

  • Enhancing the skilled migration system
  • Targeting skills needed to boost productivity
  • For Australia’s future,  permanent migration will work to build an innovative and effective workforce
