Germany Makes It Easier for Foreign Workers to Move This Summer with the Opportunity Card

Germany is thoroughly working on skilled foreign workers to move to the country. Non-EU citizens can apply for the new Opportunity Card from June 1, 2024, this astounding card seamlessly allows foreign workers to come to Germany for a year to look for a job.

What is the Opportunity Card?

The Opportunity Card, or Chancenkarte, is a new work permit for non-EU citizens. It provides an opportunity for people to live in Germany for up to a year to find a job. Meanwhile, they can work part-time for up to 20 hours a week or try out jobs for two weeks. After finding a full-time job, such workers can apply for longer-term residency more easily because they already have a job offer.

Why is Germany Doing This?

Germany needs about 400,000 new skilled foreign workers in Germany each year. They need workers, especially in fields like engineering, IT, and healthcare. The Opportunity Card is a way to attract more skilled workers to fill these roles.

Who Can Apply?

To apply for the Opportunity Card, one needs to check the following requirements:

Have at least two years of vocational training or a university degree relevant to your job.

Speak German or English.

Have enough money to financially support yourself for a year in Germany, these funds could be over €12,000.

How Does the Points System Work in Germany?

Candidates are ranked using a points system. You need at least six points to be eligible. Here’s how points are awarded:

Four points: Holding a professional qualification recognized in Germany or permission to work in a regulated profession like teaching, nursing, or engineering.

Three points: Five years of professional experience in the last seven years or German language skills at the B2 level.

Two points: Two years of professional experience with vocational training in the last five years, being under 35 years old, or having a B1 German language certificate.

One point: Being under 40 years old, having stayed in Germany for at least six months before (not for tourism), having C1 English and A2 German language skills, being trained in an occupation with a worker shortage in Germany, or applying with a spouse.

How to Apply?

One can apply for the Opportunity Card at the German consulate in your home country or the local Foreigners’ Registration Office in Germany.
