Extension of the Temporary Graduate Visa (485) Post-Study Work Rights for Higher Education Students
From 1 July 2023 onwards, the Australian Government will extend the duration of stay for some Temporary Graduate visas (subclass 485). Please see the Australian Minister for Home Affairs’ announcement:

- “Enabling students who gain an education in Australia to stay longer and contribute to our economy benefits us all.
- “After a lost decade on immigration and skills, we are looking for ways to utilize skilled migrants via enhanced training and better targeted, less exploitative programs for temporary visa workers and students.”
- Students from other Countries assists Australia to boost its Economy and Reduce the skills shortages.
- “This work is being undertaken as we work towards the conclusion of the migration review and continue to reform our broken migration and skills system.”
All doctoral graduates will be eligible for a further two-year validity.
We will provide more details on eligibility and how to apply for the extended temporary graduate visa closer to July 1, 2023.
Transitional arrangements are also in place to support other graduates.
Temporary Graduate Visa holders in Australia whose visas are to expire or will expire between 1 September 2022 and 1 July 2023 can apply.
Temporary Graduate visa holders who were in Australia throughout the COVID-19 pandemic period ,are therefore not eligible for the TGV Replacement stream may be eligible for the COVID-19 Pandemic Event (subclass 408) visa with a 2-year stay period. You must be working in Australia or have an offer of employment.
To be eligible for a pandemic event visa, you must apply 90 days before your TGV expires or 28 days after your TGV expires.
If you are granted a 408 Pandemic Event visa, you will not be eligible to apply separately for an extended TGV. You should evaluate your options carefully before you apply.
Temporary Activity Visa (Subclass 408)
Australian Government Endorsed events (Covid -19 Pandemic Event)
This temporary visa lets you stay in Australia to work if you are employed or have an offer of employment in any sector of the economy.
If you are a Temporary Graduate (subclass 485) visa (TGV) holder in Australia, you may apply for and be granted a Pandemic event visa with a 2-year period of stay, instead of a TGV extension, if:
- your TGV expires before 1 July 2023
- you are not eligible to apply for a TGV extension on 1 July 2023
- you currently have an unfinalized 408 Pandemic event visa application, and you held a TGV at the time you made that application.
You must be working in Australia or have an offer of employment, and apply within 90 days before your TGV expires, or within 28 days after your TGV expires.

Removal of occupation nomination and skills assessment requirements for Temporary Graduate visa Graduate Work stream applicants
For Temporary Graduate Visa Graduate Work Stream applications, we have removed the requirement to nominate an occupation from the skilled occupation list and obtain a skills assessment. This applies to applications submitted between July 1, 2022, and June 30, 2023.

Stay: Upon this visa, you can stay up to 18 months, temporarily increased to 24 months for visas issued from December 1, 2021. British National Overseas, Hong Kong Passport Holders can stay up to 5 years in Australia. Processing Time:
- 25% of applications: 72 Days
- 50% of applications: 5 Months
- 75% of applications: 10 Months
- 90% of applications: 13 Months
- Graduates affected by COVID-19 travel restrictions are now able to apply for and be granted a Temporary Graduate visa outside Australia – they must hold or have held an eligible Student visa.
- You can work in Australia.
- Have a qualification relevant to an occupation on the skilled occupation list (NOTE: This is not required for applications lodged between 1 July 2022 and 30 June 2023)
- You can bring your family with you.
Stay: usually between 2 and 4 years, depending on your qualification.
Hong Kong and British National Overseas Passport holders may stay for 5 years.
Processing Time:
- 25% of applications: 79 Days
- 50% of applications: 4 Months
- 75% of applications: 10 Months
- 90% of applications: 15 Months
COST
- Graduates affected by COVID-19 travel restrictions are now able to apply for and be granted a Temporary Graduate visa outside Australia – they must hold or have held an eligible Student visa.
- You can work in Australia.
- Have a qualification relevant to an occupation on the skilled occupation list (Note: This is not required for applications lodged between 1 July 2022 and 30 June 2023)
- You can bring your family with you.
Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) Second Post-Study Work Stream This visa is for holders of a Temporary Graduate visa (first Post-Study Work stream or Replacement stream) who graduated from a geographical Australian institution. It allows you to live, work, and study in Australia for a limited time.
Stay: Between 1 and 2 years depending on:
- the regional location of the educational institution that you graduated from that led to the grant of your first Temporary Graduate visa in the post-study work stream.
- the regional area that you live in as the holder of your first Temporary Graduate visa in the post-study work stream, or your Temporary Graduate visa in the replacement stream.

Stay:
Usually between the ages of 18 months and 5 years.You will be granted the same period of time as your previous visa, with the exception of:
If you were previously granted a Post Study Work visa for two years as a result of your Masters’s degree, you will now be granted three years.
If you were previously granted an 18-month Graduate Work Stream visa, you will now be granted a 2-year visa. This is a stopgap measure. When submitting an application, applicants should check the current period.
Holders of Hong Kong and British National Overseas Passports may stay for 5 years.
