The Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) initiative “An Immigration System for Canada’s Future” has been launched.
The initiative allows Canadians and other stakeholders to share their thoughts and ideas on how Canada can build a stronger, more adaptable immigration system.
According to the IRCC website,
“it is essential to have immigration policies and programs that are modern, responsive to change, and aligned with Canada’s social, economic, and cultural needs” in order to support the Canadian economy and strengthen communities. To that end, from now until April 2023, IRCC will collaborate with people across the country to develop a vision for the future of Canada’s immigration system.
The initiative kicked off in February with a face-to-face dialogue session in Halifax presided over by Canadian Immigration Minister Sean Fraser.
According to the IRCC press release, the initiative will include more in-person dialogue sessions, as well as “thematic workshops and a survey for the public and our clients.”
IRCC made this survey available to the public today. The survey invites respondents to share their perspectives on the future of Canadian immigration.
\What types of questions can I expect to see on the survey?
The survey begins by asking you about your initial thoughts on Canada’s current immigration system. IRCC specifically asks if you believe the Government of Canada is on the right or wrong track in its management of immigration, as well as your thoughts on the number of immigrants coming to Canada.
Following the answers to these questions, the IRCC provides basic information about Canada’s immigration system, including the various ways people interact with the Canadian immigration system and the policies and laws that shape it. The survey then asks about the main challenges or gaps in Canada’s current immigration system and gives you the opportunity to share your thoughts.
The survey highlights important Canadian immigration trends by asking about the characteristics or qualities that describe what you would like Canada’s immigration system to look like.
Canada, for example, has an aging population. Canadians are not having as many children, and immigration will soon account for 100% of population growth. Furthermore, many regions and industries in Canada are experiencing labor shortages. Immigration and temporary foreign workers can help to meet future labor market needs.

Under the Economic Mobility Pathways Pilot, Canada will establish a new refugee pathway.
IRCC Minister Sean Fraser has announced that Canada will launch a new immigration pathway aimed at connecting Canadian employers with skilled refugees and displaced persons.
The path will be accessible through the federal Economic Mobility Pathways Pilot (EMPP).
The minister made the announcement today in Toronto during a speech (the video link is available below).
According to the IRCC website, the new Economic Mobility Pathways Pilot (EMPP) pathway will be available this summer.
The EMPP exists to assist employers in hiring skilled refugees and other displaced individuals.
It connects such people with Canadian employers who are facing labor shortages in key occupations.
Employers will have more opportunities to fill in-demand positions such as nurse aides, personal support workers, long-term care aids, software engineers, web designers, mechanical and electrical engineers and technicians, teachers, tourism and hospitality workers, and truck and delivery service drivers thanks to the new pathway, which will be launched this summer.
Over the next few years, Canada hopes to expand the EMPP and welcome 2,000 qualified refugees and displaced persons to help fill labor shortages.
This year, Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) expect to welcome 465,000 new permanent residents.
This target is set to rise to 485,000 immigrants in 2024 and 500,000 immigrants in 2025 under the Immigration Levels Plan 2023-2025.
Last year, Canada welcomed nearly 437,000 newcomers.
Canada’s record levels of immigration, combined with record foreign student and worker admissions, resulted in the country’s population growing by over one million people for the first time in history last year.
Both pathways have recently seen a lot of activity.
Over the last week, four provinces released their most recent PNP results.
Meanwhile, IRCC has held two major Express Entry draws in the last two weeks, inviting a total of 14,000 candidates to apply for permanent residence.
