A temporary change is being implemented to allow international students within Canada to work for over 20 hours a week until 31, December 2023.
Starting today Canada will temporarily allow its international students to work for over 20 hours per week until their graduation.
The prospect of allowing students to work more than 20 hours a week was announced by the (IRCC) Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada in the previous month and was said to be implemented sometime after 15 November 2022 till 31 December 2023. This new policy was introduced as a one-time measure in order to aid Canada in dealing with its labor shortage problem by taking up job positions that are traditionally held by students such as retail, food services, and hospitality but students can be employed for other jobs as well if they are qualified. This is a one-time measure introduced to help with Canada’s labor shortage. This is particularly so for positions traditionally held by students such as food services, retail, and hospitality but the students are not restricted to only those positions.
Am I eligible to work in Canada?
Regarding eligibility, Canada has no problems allowing all its international students who have arrived in the country on a student visa to have jobs without the need for a work permit. The students can work off campus during the academic semester as long as they are enrolled to go back to their studies in the following semester, also they can work for as long as they want during the academic break.
You are eligible to work in Canada while completing your studies as long as you fulfill the following requirements:
-
hold a valid study permit;
-
Are studying full-time at a designated learning institution
-
have started studying and remain in satisfactory academic standing as determined by your institution;
-
are studying in an academic, vocational, or professional training program that is at least six months in duration and leads to a degree, diploma, or certificate; and
-
have a Social Insurance Number (SIN)
Reasons behind Canada needing international students
Aside from the fact that international students pay higher tuition fees than Canadian students, a major factor behind this is that international students greatly contribute to Canada’s economy through the work they perform in jobs that many international students take as well as their consumption of goods.
Furthermore, as Canada is currently experiencing a historic labor shortage it is currently in even higher demand for international students to fill in the nearly one million job vacancies. Canada has also recently released the Immigration Levels Plan 2023-2025 in order to tackle these labor shortages. This new plan aims to welcome around 500,000 new (PR) permanent residents by 2025 which makes international students an all the more valuable resource to Canada since they can integrate faster into Canada’s labor market due to their prior experience studying and working there and their high proficiency in English and French.
Reasons behind international students wanting to move to Canada
There are multiple reasons behind international students wanting to stay in Canada, a recent study by the Canadian Bureau of International Education, Canada is one of the most popular study destinations for international students due to Canada being a very tolerant and inclusive country, having a reputation for safety and stability and a high international student acceptance rate.

Once international students have completed their education and graduated they are eligible to apply for (PGWP) Post-Graduate Work Permit which will allow them to work in any profession for a maximum of 3 years following their graduation, depending on the length of their study program. Afterward, since the work you do under the PGWP does count as work experience, once you have completed a year of work in Canada you can apply for (PR) under the Express Entry program.
