Changes to Australia’s Temporary Graduate Visa Program

Australia is updating its Temporary Graduate (subclass 485) visa program effective from July 1, 2024. Certain changes will affect recent graduates looking to work in Australia. Here are the details, one needs to know:

Post-Higher Education Work Stream

  • New Name: The Post-Study Workstream is now the Post-Higher Education Workstream.
  • Age Limit: The maximum age for applicants has been reduced to 35 years or under.
  • Stay Periods:
    • Bachelor’s degree (including honours): Up to 2 years
    • Masters (coursework and extended): Up to 2 years
    • Masters (Research) and PhD: Goes up to 3 years
  • Exceptions: Hong Kong and British National Overseas passport holders can easily apply for the program. They have an exception of 50 years and can stay for up to 5 years. Indian nationals have specific stay periods under the Australian Indian – Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (AI-ECTA):
    • Bachelor’s degree: Up to 2 years
    • Bachelor degree (with first class honours in STEM, including ICT): Up to 3 years
    • Masters (coursework, extended, and research): Up to 3 years
    • PhD: Up to 4 years

Post-Vocational Education Work Stream

  • New Name: The Graduate Work stream will now come with the name of the Post-Vocational Education Work stream.
  • Age Limit: The age limit for applicants will be reduced in new changes and it is maximum to 35 years or under.
  • Eligibility: Applicants must have an associate degree, diploma, or trade qualification related to a job. Whereas, the chosen job should be on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL). Those with higher qualifications (Bachelor, Master, PhD) must apply through the Post-Higher Education Work stream.
  • Stay Period: Up to 18 months. Hong Kong and British National Overseas passport holders can stay for up to 5 years.
  • Age exceptions: Hong Kong and British National Overseas passport holders can apply if they are under 50 years old.

Additional Changes

  • Second Post-Study Work Stream: This will now be called the Second Post-Higher Education Work stream, with no other changes.
  • Replacement Stream: This stream was introduced for those who were affected by COVID-19 restrictions. Now, there is no more Replacement stream and discontinued.

All these changes will take effect on July 1, 2024, after the approval of the necessary legislation. However, the age limit for master’s (research) and doctoral degree graduates will remain at 50 years.
