Over 430,000 new permanent residents were admitted to Canada last year, the highest number ever welcomed in one year.
The IRCC Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada officially announced yesterday that Canada has set a new record in target for admission of permanent residents in 2022 by taking in 431,645 new permanent residents which far surpasses the record of 2021 when only 401,000 new permanent residents were accepted into the country.
Regarding this matter immigration minister, Sean Fraser made the following statement, “Today marks an important milestone for Canada, setting a new record for newcomers welcomed in a single year” and “It is a testament to the strength and resilience of our country and its people. Newcomers play an essential role in filling labor shortages, bringing new perspectives and talents to our communities, and enriching our society as a whole. I am excited to see what the future holds and look forward to another historic year in 2023 as we continue to welcome newcomers.” in the previous year the IRCC had processed around 5.2 million applications across all lines of business including permanent residence, temporary residence, and citizenship.
Immigration Levels Plan 2023-2025
Canada had previously released the Immigration Level Plan for the upcoming years of 2023-25 and it was through this plan that the highest target for admission of permanent residents was set. This plan was mainly introduced to deal with Canada’s historic labor shortage problem that arises due to the covid pandemic. Currently, there are around 1 million job vacancies in Canada and with a majority of the current working force (9 million) reaching retirement in the next few years the job vacancies will only increase in the future causing the labor demand to rise even further which Canada does not have nearly enough skilled labor to fill.
Therefore currently Canada’s economy is heavily reliant on immigration as the country is aiming to employ foreign skilled workers to fill in the gap in a labor shortage. At the same time, the country is also aiming to admit a large number of immigrants as permanent residents since the country has one of the lowest birth rates in the world and it is planning to increase the country’s population by accepting foreign people as permanent residents. In accordance with the Immigration Level Plan for 2023-35, it is shown that Canada aims to admit 500,000 new permanent residents in 2025 which is a record-breaking target.
