Subclass 190 Skilled Nominated Visa

 

The Skilled Nominated Visa (Subclass 190) allows you to live and work in Tasmania permanently.

Nomination from Tasmania for this visa gives you five extra points toward meeting the Department of Home Affairs skilled visa points test pass mark of 65 points.

If the Tasmanian Government nominates you for this visa, you must live in Tasmania for two years after the visa is granted.

State nominations and visa applications are two distinct processes. The Tasmanian Government considers your state nomination application, while the Department of Home Affairs considers your visa application.

Visa requirements – Department of Home Affairs

To be eligible for state nomination, you must meet the following Department of Home Affairs requirements.

You must have the following items:

  • not yet 45 years old nominated a skilled occupation from the relevant list of eligible skilled occupations
  • a valid and positive skills assessment of at least ‘Competent’ for your chosen occupation At least 65 points on the Department of Home Affairs points test for English language proficiency.

Please keep in mind that you must also meet the Tasmanian Government nomination requirements in order to be considered for state nomination.

Nomination requirements – Migration Tasmania

Migration of Skilled Personnel Tasmania has a number of pathways available for skilled candidates to apply for state nomination. Each pathway has a clearly defined set of requirements and attributes that a candidate must possess.

Meeting the minimum nomination requirements outlined on this website does not guarantee you a  Tasmanian nomination. Each year, the Australian Government establishes a nomination quota for the state, limiting the number of candidates who can be nominated.

Only the most competitive Expressions of Interest will be invited to apply for nomination.

Candidates who are nominated for a Subclass 491 Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa will not be considered for a permanent Subclass 190 Skilled Nominated visa. The Subclass 491 visa allows for the acquisition of permanent residency.

Permanent Residence (Skilled Regional) visa, Subclass 191.

If you or any family members (including those who do not apply for nomination with you) owe fees to Tasmanian government agencies, such as education or health, the debt must be paid or arrangements made for reimbursement before seeking the nomination. You will be ineligible for nomination until the debt is completely repaid or a payment schedule is accepted by the agency.

Subclass 491 Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) Visa:

The Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) Visa (subclass 491) is a skilled worker provisional visa that allows you to live and work in Tasmania for up to five years.

Nomination from Tasmania for this visa gives you 15 extra points toward meeting the Department of Home Affairs points test pass mark of 65.

If the Tasmanian Government nominates you for this visa, you must live in Tasmania for at least two years after the visa is granted.

After living in Tasmania for at least three years and earning a minimum taxable income that meets the threshold determined by the government, you may be eligible to apply for permanent residency through the Subclass 191 Permanent Residence (Skilled Regional) visa.

Department of Home Affairs (currently set at AU$ 53,900) for at least three years.

Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) Visa (Subclass 491)
To be considered for this pathway, you must meet all of the requirements listed below.This pathway may also require you to have one or more of the priority attributes listed.

Minimum specifications
If you work in a role classified as Skill Level 1–3 by ANZSCO, you must have worked in Tasmania for at least six months prior to your application. Your employment must have averaged at least 20 hours per week in the six months preceding the submission of your application.
You may be eligible for nomination after three months of employment if you have a skills assessment and related employment in an occupation listed on the Tasmanian Onshore Skilled Occupation List (TOSOL).
If you are a subcontractor with a related skills assessment and at least 12 months of business activity in Tasmania, you may be considered for this pathway.

If your job is unrelated to your skills assessment, you must have relevant qualifications or experience that meet the ANZSCO definition for that role.
If you work in a role that is classified as ANZSCO Skill Level 4 or 5,
You must have worked in Tasmania for at least six months* prior to making your application. Prior to submitting your application, you must have worked at least 20 hours per week for the previous 12 months.
You must currently reside in Tasmania and intend to remain in Tasmania (your dependents must not reside in another Australian state or territory).

*This requirement will be changed to at least 12 months for applications made in the 2023-24 program year.Candidates with less than six months of experience in their ANZSCO 4 or 5 role are unlikely to succeed unless they have additional priority characteristics.

Employment and working conditions


Your employer must be a well-established company that has been operating in Tasmania for at least a year.
Your wages and working conditions must be no less favorable than those of an Australian citizen or permanent resident, and your salary or wages must be at least equivalent to the market wage rate.
There must be a genuine, ongoing requirement for your position within the company (including a minimum 12-month contract with at least three months remaining at the time you apply for nomination). The contract may be casual, but it must adhere to the National Employment Standards of the Fair Work Ombudsman.

Visa requirements – Department of Home Affairs

To be eligible for state nomination, you must meet the following Department of Home Affairs requirements.

You must have the following items:

  • not yet turned 45 years of age
  • nominated an occupation on the relevant list of eligible skilled occupations
  • a valid and positive skills assessment for your nominated occupation
  • at least ‘Competent’ English language proficiency
  • at least 65 points on the Department of Home Affairs points test.
